How Shoulder & Upper Limb Rehabilitation Works
Rehabilitation starts by understanding your symptoms and how they affect the activities that matter to you. We assess relevant movement, strength and function before developing an individual management plan. Depending on your presentation, this may incorporate treatment, education, progressive exercise and strength-based rehabilitation.
01. Assess
Understand your presentation.
We start with your symptoms, injury history, current activity and goals. Your assessment may include movement, strength and functional testing relevant to your shoulder or upper limb and the activities you want to return to.
02. Treat
Develop strength and capacity.
Your rehabilitation may incorporate targeted exercises and progressive strength work based on your individual presentation. Using our fully equipped North Sydney gym, your program can be progressed as your capacity develops.
03. Rebuild
Prepare for the demands ahead.
As appropriate, rehabilitation can become increasingly specific to work, gym training, throwing, racquet sports or other activities. Your program is adjusted according to your progress and the physical demands you’re preparing for.

Shoulder & Upper Limb FAQs
Shoulder and upper limb concerns can affect people in different ways depending on their work, training and activity. Here are answers to some common questions about assessment and rehabilitation at The Movement Box in North Sydney.
What can cause shoulder pain?
Shoulder pain can be associated with a range of musculoskeletal presentations involving structures such as the rotator cuff, tendons and joints. Your activity, training, previous injuries and individual presentation may also be relevant, which is why assessment is important.
What is rotator cuff tendinopathy?
Rotator cuff tendinopathy is a term used for tendon-related pain involving one or more of the rotator cuff tendons around the shoulder. Management varies between individuals and may incorporate education, activity modification and progressive exercise where appropriate.
Do you treat tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow?
Yes. We assess and manage lateral elbow tendinopathy, commonly referred to as tennis elbow, and medial elbow tendinopathy, often called golfer’s elbow. These conditions aren't limited to people who play those sports and can also be associated with work, gym and other repetitive activities.
Can I continue training with shoulder or elbow pain?
This depends on your individual presentation. In some cases, training can continue with modifications to particular exercises, loads or movements. Your practitioner can provide guidance based on your assessment and current symptoms.
Does shoulder rehabilitation include strength training?
Where appropriate, yes. Progressive strength training may form part of shoulder and upper limb rehabilitation. Exercises can be developed in our fully equipped North Sydney gym and progressed according to your current capacity and the activities you’re working towards.
