Back & Spine Pain FAQs

Back, neck and spinal symptoms can have a range of presentations. Here are answers to some common questions about assessment and rehabilitation at The Movement Box in North Sydney.

What can cause lower back pain?

Lower back pain can be associated with a range of factors and musculoskeletal presentations. In some cases, symptoms may involve muscles, joints, discs or nerves, while for others there may not be one clearly identifiable cause. An individual assessment can help determine factors relevant to your presentation.

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is commonly used to describe symptoms associated with irritation or involvement of the sciatic nerve or related nerve roots. Symptoms can include pain, tingling, numbness or other sensations extending from the lower back or buttock into the leg. Assessment can help determine an appropriate management approach.

Can I continue exercising with back pain?

This depends on your symptoms and individual presentation. In many cases, activity may be modified rather than completely stopped, but the appropriate approach will differ between individuals. Your practitioner can provide guidance following an assessment.

Do you treat neck pain and headaches?

Our team assesses and manages musculoskeletal neck pain, including presentations associated with cervicogenic headache. Because headaches can have many different causes, assessment is important to determine whether your symptoms are appropriate for musculoskeletal management or require further medical assessment.

Does back rehabilitation include strength training?

Where appropriate, yes. Progressive exercise and strength training may form part of back rehabilitation. Our fully equipped North Sydney gym allows your program to develop towards the physical demands of work, everyday activity, training or sport.
